Dorothy Gale

A while ago :iconroxyk630 and I wanted to have a gothic lolita tea part for our dolls but instead of Alice in Wonderland we wanted to do Wizard of Oz since we lived in kansas. We never had the time to do it, so I decided to draw out the costumes I'd have liked to make. :3

In the original illustrations dorothy is blonde and ozma has dark hair... so I made Dorothy blond, which is something I rarely do. A majority of cartoon and storybook heroes in western culture are portrayed as being blond with blue eyes while the antagonist female is usually dark haired. This bothered me deeply as a child and made me wonder if I was somehow bad and/or plain because I had dark hair and brown eyes.

I gave Dorothy wheat colored blonde hair instead of cartoon yellow hair because real blond hair isn't yellow. I also gave her brown eyes to make her more like the average little girl. Brown is the most common eye color yet most heroines are depicted with blue or green eyes.


It's all sort of silly and personal I suppose, but there it is.

also, she has her original silver slippers instead of ruby. :3 I think her dress was mentioned as being blue gingham, but it's been a while since I've read the book.

And I did see the Todd McFarlane versions of the characters and frankly I think they were crappy. They were too modern horror movie. Like Wizard of Oz meets Saw... not my cup of tea. :/
