Trying for a little more streamlined...

Description

I like how his body looks more now. Before he was kind of puffy.

one of the interesting problems of being an artist is that while I lean toward realistic proportions and realistic muscle groups- what is "real" is pretty subjective as far as muscle shapes and fat deposits go. You can't really say "that guy is too feminine shaped to be a guy, men's hips do this" because that's not entirely true. You have to look at your reference photos and realize the reason you think that men's hips or women's hips look a certain way is because we photograph our cultures ideal and we hide what is not ideal. While yes, male and female pelvises are shaped a certain way depending on gender- the muscle structure and fat deposits that form over the top can hide a lot of the structure. So you can have men with soft feminine hips or women without them.

It's like natural cleavage on a woman's breasts. Some women have the tissue structure to do that and some don't. However, we tend to photograph nudes who do- or photoshop them to have it.

So in the end, yes, we do share a common, typical structure but a lot of times when someone's critique is "Well such and such is just not realistic" it probably is on a certain number of people and it could be that the view just doesn't share that aesthetic.

I mean, yes, there are physical impossibilities, like our elbows don't line up with our crotches or no one is ten heads tall(that i know of)... but it's hard as an artist to draw the line between what is pleasing to a particular person's aesthetic, our cultural aesthetic, and what's real.

anyway, that's the sort of thing i think about when i sculpt.

I find the photos of your works in progress extremely intriguing. *u*
I've always found this sort of thing fascinating.
Gives me a better idea of how I can do it myself.
